The incident began around 11 a.m. Sunday, May 1, when troopers attempted to stop a Nissan Altima for speeding on the Northern State Parkway near New Highway in Smithtown, New York State Police said.
After a short pursuit, the driver entered the on-ramp to Sunken Meadow Parkway but lost control on a curve and crashed near a wooded area, police said.
The driver then took off on foot and has not been found.
Inside the car, police found two passengers, Patrice Gordon, age 25, of Selden, and Landre Simmons, age 39, of North Babylon, police said. Both were arrested.
Investigators also found a loaded 9mm handgun with no serial number, which they referred to as a ghost gun. Such guns are sold and assembled in pieces and lack identification, making them virtually untraceable.
Both Gordon and Simmons were charged with criminal possession of a weapon, a felony. They were arraigned Monday, May 2, at Suffolk County 1st District Court.
